  • The Cost of Sleeping In

Sleeping late on the weekends can make you fat. A new study shows that by staying out and waking up later on weekends than they do on workdays, two out of three people effectively commute between two time zones every week. The weekly discrepancy, which researchers call "social jet lag," disrupts people's natural biorhythms and increases their risk of obesity and other health problems.

German researchers surveyed sleep data from 65,000 people and found that their odds of being overweight increased 33 percent for every hour of difference between their weekday and weekend sleep schedules. Ignoring our normal circadian rhythms forces us "to eat at times when the body doesn't want to eat or isn't prepared for digesting food properly," study author Till Roenneberg tells Health.com.

Previous research has also shown that living out of sync with your body clock makes you more likely to smoke and drink, and to suffer from diseases like diabetes and cancer.

    When Sleepless Nights Spell Trouble

An answer of "true" to two or more of the following statements may be signs of a sleep problem.

    • I need an alarm clock in order to wake up at the appropriate time.
    • It's a struggle for me to get out of bed in the morning.
    • Weekday mornings I hit the snooze button several times to get more sleep.
    • I feel tired, irritable and stressed out during the week.
    • I have trouble concentrating and remembering.
    • I feel slow with critical thinking, problem-solving and being creative.
    • I often fall asleep watching television.

Is Red Wine good for me?

Is Red Wine good for me? What about all those studies saying moderate red wine intake has health benefits?

No, red wine is not good for you. Alcohol is poison to the human cell, and nothing has changed that! Alcohol is a drug, a mind-altering substance, one that use of causes a great deal of pain on our planet. Now, as for these "studies" and the startling conclusions that are drawn from them, remember that studies are not the final word. They are studying what is in the product, not the whole product. Yes, there are good compounds in red wine, but grapes have more. It looks like our society is trying hard to find a way to justify our addiction to alcohol and ways to escape our feelings. Not to mention the huge financial impact the alcohol industry has on our culture.

Sorry to be so harsh, but someone has to tell the truth. Yes, the French are healthier than us. But how scientific is it to assume that is from red wine? They also eat four times the fruits and vegetables we do, and get twice the amount of exercise of the average American. I look at the people I know who are big drinkers, and they are not healthy!
